RecoverIQ vs. Churn Buster vs. Stunning: Which Dunning Tool Is Right for You?

An honest comparison of RecoverIQ, Churn Buster, and Stunning — pricing, features, installation complexity, and which tool is right for your Stripe subscription business.

Disclosure: I'm the founder of RecoverIQ. I've done my best to represent Churn Buster and Stunning accurately. If anything is wrong or outdated, email me at don@recoveriqapp.com and I'll fix it.

If you're evaluating dunning tools for your Stripe subscription business, you've probably come across Churn Buster and Stunning. Maybe you've found RecoverIQ too. These tools all solve the same core problem — recovering revenue from failed subscription payments — but they're built for different stages, budgets, and technical tolerances.

This isn't a “we're the best” post. There are real scenarios where Churn Buster is the right call and RecoverIQ isn't. I'll cover those honestly.

What I'll compare: pricing, installation complexity, feature coverage, and who each tool is genuinely designed for. The goal is to save you the time of installing all three.

What These Tools Actually Do (and Don't Do)

Before the comparison, it's worth being precise about the problem all three tools are solving.

Subscription payment failures break into two categories. Involuntary churn happens when a subscriber's payment method fails — their card expired, their bank flagged the charge, they had a temporary cash flow issue. The subscriber didn't intend to cancel. They're recoverable if you reach out in time, with the right message, and give them an easy way to update their payment details.

Voluntary churn is a different problem: a subscriber who actively chooses to cancel. Dunning tools don't solve voluntary churn, though some platforms (notably Churn Buster) layer in cancel flow tooling on top of their dunning suite.

All three tools — RecoverIQ, Churn Buster, and Stunning — primarily address involuntary churn through a combination of intelligent retries and email outreach. The differences are in how they install, what the emails look like, how much the analytics tell you, and how far their scope extends beyond payment recovery.

Churn Buster — Best for Established SaaS With an Active Churn Problem

Churn Buster is the most comprehensive tool in this comparison. It's been around for years, is well-proven at scale, and its scope goes significantly beyond the other two.

What makes it stand out

The cancel flow. Churn Buster's differentiator isn't really its dunning emails — it's the cancel flow builder. When a subscriber clicks “Cancel,” Churn Buster intercepts the cancellation and presents a retention offer: a pause option, a discount, a plan downgrade, an alternative. Done well, cancel flows recover a meaningful percentage of customers who otherwise would have churned voluntarily. Neither RecoverIQ nor Stunning offers this.

Analytics depth. Churn Buster has the most comprehensive reporting of the three. Cohort analysis, recovery rate breakdowns by decline type, email performance tracking, and churn attribution data all live in the dashboard.

SMS. Churn Buster sends SMS recovery messages in addition to email. For certain customer segments — particularly consumers rather than B2B — SMS recovery outperforms email significantly.

Proven at scale. Churn Buster has been used by established SaaS businesses for years and has the track record to show for it.

Who it's for

Churn Buster is the right call when you have meaningful MRR (think $50K+), both voluntary and involuntary churn are active problems, and you have a team member with the time and technical capacity to integrate the tool properly and actively manage it.

Who it's not for

Churn Buster is overkill for early-stage businesses, solo founders, or anyone who needs to be live in an hour without touching a webhook. The $149/month starting price is real, and the integration requires more setup than either of the other two tools.

Stunning — Best Lightweight Option for Stripe Users Who Want Simplicity

Stunning is one of the original Stripe dunning tools. It's been around since the early days of subscription billing, and that longevity is its quiet advantage: reliable deliverability, a feature set that has been refined through years of real merchant feedback, and a pricing model that scales with your MRR rather than requiring a large fixed commitment.

What makes it stand out

MRR-based pricing. Stunning's pricing scales with your MRR rather than a flat monthly fee. For early-stage businesses, this means you're not paying $149/month before you've validated whether dunning delivers ROI.

Email + SMS. Stunning sends both email and SMS dunning messages, which puts it ahead of RecoverIQ on channel coverage.

Card expiration alerts. Stunning has dedicated card expiration alerting that proactively reaches out to subscribers whose cards are about to expire before the charge fails.

Who it's for

Stunning is a solid choice for subscription businesses at any MRR who want a simple, well-established dunning tool, don't need a cancel flow, and want SMS recovery in addition to email.

Who it's not for

Stunning doesn't offer AI-personalized email copy or the “everything inside Stripe” experience of a Stripe Marketplace app. If you want more sophisticated email personalization or you want the tool to live inside your existing Stripe Dashboard without a separate login, Stunning isn't the fit.

RecoverIQ — Best for Stripe-Native Zero-Setup Installation

RecoverIQ is a Stripe Marketplace app, which means it installs directly from the Stripe App Marketplace via OAuth and lives inside your Stripe Dashboard. No webhook configuration, no API keys to manage, no separate login to remember.

What makes it stand out

Installation. RecoverIQ installs in about 60 seconds. You authorize it via OAuth from the Stripe Marketplace, and it immediately has access to your subscription events. There's no integration work.

AI-personalized email copy. RecoverIQ uses AI to vary email copy per customer — something neither Stunning nor Churn Buster currently offers. Rather than sending the same template to every subscriber who fails a payment, RecoverIQ's AI (powered by Claude) reads each customer's profile — tenure, plan, lifetime value — and selects a framing strategy appropriate to that customer. Long-tenured subscribers get loyalty framing. Newer subscribers get urgency. High-LTV accounts get a concierge tone.

Click-time Customer Portal links. Every recovery email sent by RecoverIQ includes a link to the Stripe Customer Portal. Here's the problem most dunning systems have: Stripe Customer Portal session URLs have a short expiration window — five minutes per Stripe's documentation. If you pre-generate that link when the email is sent and the customer opens the email six hours later, the link is already dead. RecoverIQ's links are redirects — the actual portal session is minted the moment the customer clicks, so the link never expires before they act.

Price. RecoverIQ starts at $69/month for businesses up to $20K MRR, $99/month for businesses up to $250K MRR, and $149/month for businesses up to $1M MRR. No MRR-based scaling, no enterprise pricing to negotiate.

Where it honestly falls short right now

No cancel flow. RecoverIQ recovers involuntary churn — failed payments. It doesn't intercept voluntary cancellations. If cancel-flow tooling is important to you, Churn Buster is the right call.

No SMS. RecoverIQ sends email-only recovery sequences. If your customers respond better to text than email, Stunning or Churn Buster covers this.

Newer. RecoverIQ is newer than both Stunning and Churn Buster. Less proven at scale, smaller track record. If you need a tool with a five-year operational history behind it, that's a real consideration.

Decision Framework

Start with RecoverIQ or Stunning if:

  • You want to be live and recovering payments in under an hour
  • You're at $0–$100K MRR and involuntary churn is the main thing you're solving
  • You want the lowest price point while you validate the ROI
  • You want AI-personalized email copy without engineering work (RecoverIQ specifically)
  • You want SMS recovery in addition to email (Stunning specifically)

Consider Churn Buster when:

  • You have meaningful MRR ($50K+) and both voluntary and involuntary churn are active problems
  • You want cancel interception — pause, discount, or downgrade offers for subscribers who try to cancel
  • You need analytics depth beyond “how much did I recover”
  • You have a team member who can own the integration and manage the tool actively

The Bottom Line

These are all legitimate tools. The choice is almost always a function of where you are, not which tool is objectively better in some absolute sense.

If you're an early-stage founder on Stripe who wants payment recovery set up today without an engineering afternoon, RecoverIQ is designed for you. If you want a simple, established dunning tool with MRR-based pricing and SMS support, Stunning is a solid choice. If you're running significant MRR, have voluntary churn to address alongside failed payments, and want the most comprehensive tooling available, Churn Buster is worth the price.

The worst outcome is doing nothing. Every month without a recovery system is a month where recoverable payments fail silently, customers who wanted to stay don't get a chance to, and your actual churn rate runs higher than it needs to.
